Once past the remnants of the enemy formation, Roderick pulled into a banking climb to keep the stragglers in view.  He didn't miss the pounding their cover received courtesy of Dwer's Rhea.  Their return fire seemed clumsy, their responses amateurish.

Taking the opportunity to reposition himself, Roderick started his attack run at a point where the two Thunderbolts and him were in a straight line.  Keeping himself in a blind spot from the further battroid, Roderick bored in with linked beam cannons, aiming for the points just above the knees of the closer Thunderbolt to server them completely.  Picking on rookies didn't sit well with him, so he'd take them out of the fight without killing them if he could.  That meant separating the first mecha from its engines.

Rallye’s warning left only seconds to react. Kes slammed her impromptu shield forward with an engine-assisted push. The Thud went into a flailing spin forward, disoriented but unharmed. She applied the engine and accelerated with the inertia of the hit.

The Thud had not recovered when Kes primed the impact cannon and fired three missiles into the center of the fighter. It was too close, too quick. He never heard the warning as the short range missiles tore into the cockpit and the engine.

The resulting explosion hid the Rhea behind a cloud of fire and metal just long enough. Kes juked to her left while she fired the cannon at the Nightmare. She continued the evasive maneuver while dropping countermeasures in her wake. If he and his beam cannon survived she'd insure he had as many useless targets as possible.

Dwer's plan worked better than anticipated.  The continued impacts against the asteroid drove the 'Bolts out of cover, the rock eventually splitting and breaking apart.  They were so focused on his missile attack that they hardly noticed Rod slide under their formation.  Blazing up from beneath, the beam cannons clipped his target at the knee joints.  Flailing, the pirate 'Bolt tried to bring his gunpod around, but Rod sent another blast his way, searing the arm off at the shoulder.  One of the bandits turned to fire as Rod rocketed through their formation, only to catch a blast from Dwer.  Caught dead on the mecha plumped and exploded.  Dwer continued his advance.

Rallye was leaping forward even as Kes pushed her decoy into the line of fire.  Already doomed, the pirate exploded from the point blank assault.  Kes danced away as the Nightmare brought the gunpod in line and fire.  The beam lanced through the debris cloud and sliced through the space Kes and briefly occupied.  The Nightmare pilot tried to put the beam on target, cutting through the rocks and debris and chasing Kes with the hellish energy of the beam lance.  He was about to connect when Kes responded with her own beam cannon.  Discretion being the better part of valor, the pirate ace threw himself out of the line of fire and at the same time negated his own attack.  Taking advantage of the enemy's momentary loss of awareness, Rallye bracketed the lead fighter, sending volleys his way.  The Nightmare proved more competent than the minions he led.  Dropping the gunpod he rocked back on his thrusters and pulsed shots down at his assailant.  Old model met new model as the -17 and -171 both evaded fire.  Rallye's last shot clipped the right hip on the Nightmare.  In return, the pirate stitched several beams down Rallye's starboard side, coming close to the cockpit before relative velocities broke sustained fire lines.  Rallye rolled past the Nightmare as Eric's tailing drone slashed in at a ninety degree angle and speared it with a triple beam pulse.  Taking it on his left arm, the Nightmare lost the beam cannon there but shrugged off most of the fire.  It pulsed a shot back, but the drone deftly dipped behind a rock and powered around to place the Nightmare between itself and Rallye's position.  The pirate Thunderbolts regrouped with their comrades.  The group of six seemed intent on Kes' Rhea, but none of their fire reached her.

Olga's cat and mouse with the Rau denied it a clean shot at the second drone.  Tactical programming kicked in, and the drone cut its engines.  Allowing its current vector to carry it clear of the enemy Thunderbolt presence, the drone started spraying fire back at the Q-Rau.  Seemingly inaccurate, the fire was easily dodge by the Rau pilot.  The real point of the barrage became apparent.  Driving the Rau between a dual rock formation, the power armor briefly exposed itself to Olga.  While not completely vulnerable, Olga did catch it with a burst of fire and savaged its left shoulder, blasting apart the missile launcher located there.  Cursing her mistake, the Rau pilot boosted into a full acceleration spiral, looping back for the cover of her squad.  The Thunderbolts made individual soft landings on rocks, peppering Olga's position with fire.  Olga was forced from direct pursuit of the Rau, but blood was in the water.

Quola led Natalya in on the run on the pirate cruiser.  The fire intensified as they closed, the main turrets coming dangerously close on more than one occasion.  Threading the needle, Quola hit the ship first.  Racing down the spine from aft to bow, she hit the AA turret line first.  Missiles corkscrewed onto target as she took the first missile launcher.  Fire ran along the hull as she blew apart three of the smaller beam turrets.  Pulling under the barrel of the forward capital beam turret, she gave it a good kick in passing and then threw herself into evasives as the ship vainly tried to swat her from the sky.  Natalya raced along the same path, holding fire for the big score.  Coming in tight she let loose at near point blank with the forward turret.  Beams and cannon fire chewed enough armor for her missiles to penetrate.  With a dual heaving the beam turret broke from the deck of the cruiser and exploded.  Natalya used the cover of the explosion to race back for the safety of the rock field.

Eric's suspicions were confirmed.  Even as Quola ducked beneath the edge of the cruiser, enemy power armor pounced from the cargo pay.  Two Renegade armors, similar to the earlier attackers, opened fire.  Three of the large beams missed.  The fourth barely touched the top of her armor.  The impact cannon melted away at the beam's kiss, Quola's armor immediately showing a power loss and structural integrity warnings not a few feet from her head.  The suit already sealed the breach, but another hit there and she'd be exposed to hard vacuum.  Eric sighted his target and let loose with both of his wing mounted missiles.  It would take a few seconds for the warheads to cross the distance, but Eric was firing more to cover Quola than do any real damage.  His real attack came in the form of the remaining two drones flashing past Quola to hit the lead Renegade head on.  Six beams converged on the armor and perforated the pilot inside.  The suit blew apart as the two avenging angels moved on to cover their living companion.

With the damage to her bow caused by the loss of her forward weapons array, the Bonney started to list.  Secondary explosions tore the heart out of the starboard side weapons array.  The shuttle now had its opening.  It was time to decisively end this fight.

The enemy was using the rocks. Olga did not like the enemy. Therefore, she would take away their rocks.

She sprayed suppressing fire about with her arm cannons, throwing a few micro-missiles into the mix for their distraction value, while her anti-ship cannon and linked chest cannons went to work. "If Hy hed a hemmer . . ."

Why else would people keep giving her heavy weapons if not to take away the enemy's rocks?

“He's still got that soft streak.Unfortunate.”

Dwer chose to say nothing about Rod’s act of mercy; as long as the target wasn't shooting he had no reason to say anything. He opened comms.

“Gradius, change heading and assist at Alpha. They could use an extra set of guns.” He switched back over to the Rhea unit frequency.

“Momma I’m inbound, I’ll fry the small fish you go and hook the big one.”

Lining up a shot with the Impact cannon he let loose slamming an energy ball square into the flank of one of the landing Thunderbolts, taking the pilots by surprise as Dwer’s Rhea shot over their heads. He joined Olga in laying down massive volumes of fire on the hapless VF-11’s, ripping into both Valkyrie and space rocks alike.

Pinned in from both sides it was unlikely the out-dated machines would last long.

***
Quola winced as she felt her cannon ripped from its mounting. She really could have used that right about now. She let out a sigh of relief as ruby lances tore apart one of the Renegades.

“Thanks Eric, I owe you!”

She was ‘low’, she was ‘slow’ and she'd taken damage. She had one advantage over the enemy armour though.

Rolling the Rhea she made a beeline for the hull of the crippled Bonney. Her plan was to keep the ship behind her, hopefully that would discourage the enemy from firing those giant cannons of his for fear of hitting his own ship.

Weaving in between protrusions on the hull she sprayed laser fire in his general direction, punctuating each bob and weave with a pack of six missiles. She raked the side of the limping ship with chest mounted cannons, creating a trail of glittering shrapnel in her wake.

<"Catch me if you can!"> she taunted the power amour pilot in Zentran.

Weaving through the debris Rallye and his opponent traded high speed blows as his valkyrie shuddered under the impacts of beam weaponry. The HUD did a near-instantaneous self diagnostic using the plethora of sensors netting his craft, indicating that the damage was non-catastrophic, even during transformation. When Rallye reacquired his target, it had lost a weapon and Eric’s drone narrowly evaded behind a rock. Increasing his speed, he slingshotted around an oblong asteroid to bring his noise towards the older ‘Mare. Snagging a lock from 12 O’clock high, four missiles left their signature trails, snaking to converge to the targets location.

Tumbling in Battroid landed him on an even bigger piece space real estate. Righting his craft, he condensed to GERWALK to re-track his target. Once he was found, his reticle danced as four cannons continuously tracked a blanket of suppressing fire through the dark vacuum, occasionally pulverizing left over planet material in the path.

What was left of Alpha and Beta’s Thunderbolt group had clustered up, separated by a few hundred meters. They were too tempting a target for Kes to ignore. If they wanted her attention, they had it. Kes maxed out the throttle and spun forward. Her aim was set on a spot just between the two Thuds at the center of the group.

Kes decided these pilots were not a significant threat. Their equipment was out of date and their training was not up to par. She had no interest in dragging out the fight. Better to end whatever threat there was now.

She dumped countermeasures and locked onto the immediate four Thunderbolts. In three seconds she was in-between the two pairs. Kes toggled the missile release. A full 32-missile launch disgorged from two of her four missile pods. Physics would take care of the rest.

The Rhea weaved through the space between the third Thud pair and unleashed on one with chest cannons and arm cannon. Kes cut engines and rotated to face the Thuds as inertia carried her onward. This time all remaining targets were locked. Another 32 missiles streaked away toward the receding forms.

Natalya dumped velocity, killing her vector away from the enemy ship. She scanned the tactical repeater while she had a moment's respite.

The smile that graced her lips as she took in the situation would have terrified a jackal.

She pushed the Nightmare's engines to full military power. She'd redlined them enough for one day, and full power didn't suit her mood., Dashing back across the pirate's bow, she slalomed between a pair of Thuds, dropping chaff and flares as she went. Swee and Coolhand didn't need her help, but she figured the Thunderbolt pilots were green enough to take the bait she was offering. If the tried to track her, they'd leave themselves open.

She flipped to battroid as she angled across the battle space, on a vector to put the group of VF-11's on the rocks between herself and Olga. Head lasers tracked the Rau, and went into continuous rapid fire mode. She left the on board AI handle that. She didn't expect to score against that target. She just wanted the pilot to have something to think about.

Her attention was on the Thuds. She toggled a cloud of missiles--noting that stores management was complaining that the racks were getting light--at the green horns as she angled behind their cover. She picked the closet of them and, literally, blew his head off. Hopefully he'd make a mess of their comms soiling himself.

Sending more rounds down range, these targeted to kill the other Thunderbolts, she opened a private channel to Olga. "Aren't you already having a dance partner?"

Tommy and Jo had been keeping the shuttle out of the fight, waiting for an opening.

The explosions rippling along the Bonny finally provided that opening. "Here we go." Tommy was speaking to no one in particular as he gunned the engines and laid in a course for the  Bonny.

Next too him Jo toggled the intercom to let the rest of the shuttles occupants know what was going on, "We're headed in, ETA 45 seconds. Be ready to come out swinging."

The shuttle tore through space, rather nimbly for its size, heading straight towards the conveniently made opening in the enemy ship.

Tommy danced the shuttle around as the last of the Pirate mecha were swept from the sky.  The Thunderbolts were woefully outmatched, even more so as more of them died.  Confused by Natalya's dash between them, the remaining two 'Bolts nearest the Bonney chased after her with gunpod fire.  Neither connected.  The group facing off against Olga soon found themselves bereft of cover as the sharp fanged pilot blew rock after rock apart with her heavy cannons.  Forced out of cover, the rear most Thunderbolt had enough time to turn to face the volley Dwer let loose.  He was consumed in a fireball.  Natalya announced her presence with a volley of her own, catching the next two in line.  The last Thunderbolt tried to flee out of the kill zone but was intercepted by one of Eric's drones.  Caught by an energy blast, it reeled backwards, only to be speared by Olga's impact cannon and incinerated.

Kes, meanwhile, saturated the second squad of Thunderbolts with a dual missile swarm.  Two were taken in the first volley, unable to totally avoid the missiles as they tracked in.  The quartet that remained seemed split between shooting Kes down and detonating the second swarm.  One Thunderbolt managed to put an extended burst into the CCS Rhea, carving into its right flank and sawing the right leg clean off.  Kes' screen blinked the loss of her right launcher.  The offending Thunderbolt ate five missiles and exploded.  A fourth pulsed fire at her, but missed.  It likewise vanished under missile impacts.  The remaining two, through a combination of gunpod fire and decoys, evaded death for another moment.  They reconfigured to fighter and blasted towards their mothership, obviously shaken.

Rallye chased after the older Nightmare as it continually switched its focus from him to the other drone.  The pilot was good, keeping up with the one two punch of -171 and combat drone, deftly dodging or using cover to avoid the attacks.  It fired on Rallye's missile attack, stopping the missiles short of their target, then managed to go on to put a laser blast into Eric's drone, pulverizing the left wing and one of the laser clusters.  Forced off, the drone flew back towards Eric's position.  Rallye took advantage of the situation and pumped cannon rounds all over the area, leaving little room for the Nightmare pilot to dodge.  More shots hit its damaged side, finishing off the arm and working on the body underneath.  The situation became too desperate for the pilot, and rather than dying in his mecha he punched out.  The Nightmare disintegrated in his absence.

The Q-Rau managed to evade all of the incoming fire.  Rolling around she saw Natalya and Olga link up for a paired attack.  She also calculated the odds of her surviving against two Rheas and a -171.  Dumping a massed volley of thirty missiles equally aimed at both female CCS pilots, she hit her thrusters and angled for a sharp arc towards the Bonney.  She sent fire Dwer's way to keep him honest, but largely ignored the drone harrying her.

Quola's plan worked relatively well.  Unable to use its big ship killer cannons, the Renegade was forced on to his lighter secondaries, mere pop guns by comparison.  Quola easily bobbed around the smaller energy pulses.  She strobed a triple pulse of fire back down at the Renegade, catching him center mass but failing to put the armor down.  It charged in, trying to grapple with Quola.

With the tight confines of the fight, Eric's drones declined to engage the power armor and instead went to work on pounding more of the capital ships defenses into scrap.  They completed the destruction of the defense cluster facing the shuttle even as it made landing.  Magnetic clamps latched on as the boarding ram burned through the hull and resealed the breach, connecting the two vessels as one.  Shouts and warning klaxons could be heard further into the ship as Nick dropped into position.  Tiff and Niven took up waiting positions within the shuttle, letting the professional sneak go first.  Nick could see down the spinal hallway.  Several doors spaced equal distance from each other led down either way.  If the schematics had been accurate, the bridge would be to his right, with the engine room to his left.  Both would be at the ends of their respective parts of his hallway.  At least a half dozen of the side doors would lead to the main cargo hold.  He'd have to move quickly.

Tiff waited inside the shuttle, sidearm holsted but with a conventional and smoke grenade in hand.  Depending on what response they got, she'd react accordingly.

Outside, Roderick peeled off from his an aborted attack on Alpha when they converged with Beta and ate a multitude of missiles before breaking off.  He took a moment to check on Kes in the aftermath of the exchange, making sure she was in no immediate danger before setting off on a chase of the two remaining Thunderbolts from that formation.  "Kes, you all right?"

Roderick let fly with a pair of missiles each and linked beam cannons, mindful of the backdrop and any potential targets of opportunity.

Dwer nimbly evaded the Q-rau’s suppressive fire while aiding his wingmen in defeating the missile swarm.  Arm cannons raked pulse laser fire across the oncoming warheads. Engines flaring he cut out and around the missile cloud, maintaining visual on the clearly skilled Meltran power armour.

“I’m going to swing around and try to cut her off.” He commed to his squaddies “You two try to catch her in crossfire.”

***

Quola met the renegade’s charge head on, the two mecha colliding with a world shaking crunch. Her opponent had the inertia advantage and the two smashed violently into the hull of the Bonney in a chaotic flailing of limbs.

Both mecha grabbed and grappled, tumbling awkwardly as they tried to jostle for position. Quola winced slightly as she could hear metal stressing and bending, she was pretty sure the sounds were coming from her –Rhea rather than the renegade.

Her eyes however were on fire, she felt energised, alive. Her mother had warned her against battle lust, so she tried to keep  the feeling under control.

Somehow she managed to get a gun free and pointing at her wrestling partner. She did not hesitate in pulling the trigger.

Olga shifted her fire-support posture to anti-missile and did her best to defend both herself and Natalya, letting the other pilot concentrate on offense. Not that she really wanted her to kill the Q-Rau pilot, but if it happened, it happened.

“I’m loosing my edge… relying on a spray n’ pray? What kind of novice shit is that? Maybe I’m getting over all this pilot shit…”

He watched from a distance as his crude but minimally effective technique bore fruit. He succeeded in downing the pilot, but there was no french-fried corpse as the other battlefield victories. Pushing the thought to the rear he throttled up towards the enemy capital ship right as the boarding party rolled out their own welcome mat.

Not two rounds into his defensive orbit around the shuttle, alerts poured in about two incoming making a bee-line for home plate. Bringing his nose up rightly, he pulled the trigger after he got a positive tone. Eight deadly intentions screamed their way towards their final destinations. Darting through smaller clusters of debris, he threw his craft at the bandits to engage for closer combat.

Natalya shifted back to fighter, spamming decoys as she powered directly into the oncoming missile cloud. She trusted the active/passive stealth and the fact that the Nightmare + was least observable from the front to give her an advantage, but mostly trusting her skill, and Olga to get her through. She wasn't about to let the enemy's ace get away clean.

She felt certain the best way to accomplish that was to take control of the enemy ship, but second best was killing the rau.

She did wonder how, exactly she was going to do that with handful of missiles she had left.

She broke hard right, at the merge, shifting to GERWALK and using the engine power to increase her side vector ina powerslide, foward beam cannon pounding at the remants of the missile swarm, then boosted after the rau, sliding back into fighter mode as she went.

FAST packs. She needed real, honest FAST packs in a super configuration. Not that she was concerned with her ability to service her target, but she still really wanted the speed reserve. She wondered, idlely, if the old VF-17 packs could be modified for the -171.

She drew bead on the rau, the put a full volley of auto and beam cannon fire between the armor and the enemy ship, tracking her fire back toward the power armor.

"Don't be going home yet. There is still being time to play."

Kes tracked one of the two retreating Thunderbolts. Her Rhea was in no condition to pursue at that speed.

She rotated the anti-ship cannon into position and let it charge while the computer took aim at one of the two retreating ships. She was flying straight and hard. Scared and running to safety. An easy target if Kes could keep the frame stable.

The computer selected a leading shot on the center of mass. Kes bumped the weapon into position and fired a parting gift.

"Kes, you all right?"

It was Rod. She sighed and opened her comm.

“Yeah. Take out the strays. I need to fault check.”

For the first time since the start of hostilities, Kes took a moment to clear still active warnings and check for any major faults that would keep her out of the battle. She tallied the essentials: leg gone, missile pod out of commission, arm weapon destroyed. While the computer ran checks, Kes banked towards the main battle near the Bonney. She’d be damned if she ended the battle with missiles still in her pods.

Nevin fretted over his sidearm and his medical bag one last time before taking position. He had little else to do but sit tight and wait for Nick’s report from the hall.

If there had been any doubts to the outcome of the battle they were erased in the next few moments.  Even retrofitted as it was, the large ore cruiser was no match for dedicated military machines piloted by as experienced pilots as the members of CCS.  The drones swarmed over the hull, blasting the last of the defenses.  They moved on to cover the engine block, awaiting Eric's order to cripple the beast completely.

Quola went blow for blow with her opponent.  The slightly larger Renegade rained punches down on her Rhea, cracking the sensor cowling and beating one of her missile bays shut.  She likewise smashed his two close-in guns and went to work on his chest armor.  The pirate grasped at her weakened shoulder section, fingers latching on to the rent in her armor.  Twisting, he tried to pry the suit open and get at her proper.  Quola's damage monitor screamed at her as the metal started to give way, the automatic seals in her pilot suit hissing shut as the Rhea detected direct exposure.  Quola landed a left hook into the Renegade's rib section and her targeting computer chimed a solid lock.  The forearm cannon spun into life and hammered fire through the side of the armor and into the pilot's section.  The Renegade stopped moving and drifted away limply.  Quola's flight suit bleeped her internal oxygen supply had been activated.  She had more than enough time to get back to the Rose, but she was done for the day.

The Thunderbolts were dispatched far more easily.  Even with the cover of the asteroids their path was easily followed be Rod, Rallye, and Kes.  The trailing one saw Rod coming first and banked hard, trying to put a larger rock between the two.  Rod's fire skipped off the cover, his two missiles burrowing in and cratering a large section.  Rallye's missiles made up the distance and streaked in as the Thunderbolt pulled around for a shot on Rod.  The pilot managed to catch the first three with gunpod fire, but the last five made it through.  The first two hit almost simultaneously, slamming the valkyrie back into the asteroid and causing it to bounce forward into the remaining volley.  The missiles hit and the Thunderbolt disappeared in a ball of fire.  Kes, despite her mounting damage, lined up her shot perfectly.  As the Thunderbolt lined up to take cover inside the Bonney she let loose with her beam.  The hellish intensity of the anti-ship beam was far more than the 'Bolts meager armor could handle.  It atomized under the attack.

That left the Q-Rau to Dwer, Olga, and Natalya.  Olga went into defensive overwatch mode, swatting missiles and making a general annoyance of herself as the Rau continued to speed around.  The power armor's patterns became more and more erratic.  The CCS pilots had effectively neutralized her primary weapon, and if she went hand to hand with any of them the others would blow her out of space.  Dancing was her only option, and Natalya was closing in.  Utilizing the Rau's legendary vectoring she cut back and over as Natalya sidestepped her path, strobing laser fire at Dwer as she tried to evade his attack.  She dropped four missiles in her wake, but Olga took them out almost immediately.  Coming back around she shot back at Olga, twin impact cannons drilling into the Meltrandi commando's chest and right arm.  Structural reports in Olga's HUD blinked into the red, but registered hull integrity maintaining.  Natalya, realizing her opponent was about to outpace her, let loose with the best shot she had.  Twin beams connected with the abdomen of the Rau as cannon fire stitched up and into the chest.  The Rau pilot flung herself over in a dive.  The armor sheered off just under the waist, the two legs continuing on their previous path.  Dwer cut in on the pilot, cannon fire impacting on her shoulder assembly.  The Rau rolled in space, the right side engine flaring as the left side sputtered futilely.  Its left arm tracked on Natalya, the triple barrels coming in to line with her cockpit.  Then the engines cut out and all power fled the stricken armor, locking it in its last pose of defiance.

Inside the pirate cruiser the assault crew waited.  It wasn't long before shouts became foot steps, and foot steps turning into the whine of bullets ricocheting off the docking port.  The element of surprise now lost, the only thing to do was fight their way into the hallway and either cut the crew quarters off or storm the bridge.  Niven, utilizing his Sari-C, noticed three pirates with pistols towards the aft section of the hallway.  They had opened doors to use as cover and were taking only the occasional pot shot.  To the front a blast door was closing slowly, obviously to keep the boarders from easily gaining access to the bridge.  More bodies could be seen coming up from the engineering section with rifles and shotguns.  The team would have to move quick or be forced off the cruiser.

The Nightmare rocketed toward the stricken Rau, breifly flashing to GERWALK to reverse thrust and twisting to battriod. Its gun pod snapped in line for the killing shot, and the killer squeezed the trigger.

The gun pod was empty.

Natalya reloaded, the killer retreated. Natalya had time to recognize the Rau was no longer a threat.

She slipped around behind the powersuit, wrapping it in a half-nelson. Her free hand gripped the Rau's "head," almost as if she were going to rip the machine's faceplate off. The Russian had a more practical reason.

She activated the Nightmare's loudspeaker. No one could hear you scream in space, unless you were screaming in direct contact with them. Considering the utility of contact communication, valkyrie hands were wired for two way sound.

"You're flying is being not bad," she said. "You're employer is being dismantled, right now. Are you wanting new job?"

Olga considered. She was at no armor in multiple locations, Natalya's icon was slowly blinking critical, and the enemy Rau pilot was probably experiencing a loss of life support; the Rau models were very good at that. Tactically, they should probably retreat with prisoner in tow. Except . . . there was a worrying silence from the shuttle.

Oh well. The enemy ship was closer anyway.

She opened a line to Natalya. "Ve all need to get somevere mit life support und fewer beeg guns. Their place iz closer; vy don' ve drag her dere?" She gestured to the helpless Rau while painting the cruiser's hanger entrance on their nav display.

(Sorry for delays)

Left or right?  Nick was ashamed to say he froze with indecision.  He’d been out of it too long, perhaps, but he also knew, deep down, that it was sink or swim, and right away.

He looked at Tif and nodded left down the hallway towards the gunfire.  “Frag then smoke, quick!”

“The rest, right!” he said, and darted across the hallway to clear the way, pulling out his heavy sidearm (let’s be honest, it was really his mainarm) and sent a few mostly wild shots downrange.  Whether he drew fire or suppressed fire, it should give Tiff the room she needed, and opened up space to the blast door.

After the loud, hallway-shattering kaboom (there was supposed to be a hallway-shattering kaboom, anyhow), he'd run towards the blast door and take cover down a side door.

“Tommy, Doc, go!  If we get cut off, we’ll route through the cargo bay.  Tif can make a door.”
